Sublimation vs HTV: Which Should You Use?

These are the two most common ways crafters get a design onto a shirt, and they work in fundamentally different ways. HTV (heat transfer vinyl) is a physical film you cut, weed, and press onto the surface of a garment. Sublimation is ink that turns to gas under heat and dyes polyester fibers permanently — the design becomes part of the fabric. Neither is "better"; they solve different problems, and most established sellers eventually use both. Here's the honest breakdown.

The Fabric Rule Is the Deciding Factor

Sublimation dye only bonds to polyester. On a 100% cotton shirt the ink washes out almost completely within a few cycles; on a 50/50 blend it survives at roughly half strength, giving a faded "vintage" look that's sometimes desirable but never vibrant. And because the dye is transparent, it has no white ink — it cannot show up on dark fabric at all. That's why sublimation shirts are overwhelmingly white or pastel polyester.

HTV has no such limits: it sits on top of the fabric, so it works on black cotton hoodies, canvas tote bags, denim — anything that tolerates the press temperature. If your product line is dark cotton shirts, the decision is already made: HTV.

Startup Cost and Equipment

HTV needs only what most crafters already own: a cutting machine and a heat source (a household iron works for first projects, though a press pays for itself in consistency). Rolls of HTV are cheap, and one color equals one roll.

Sublimation needs a dedicated printer — either a converted inkjet (the budget path) or a purpose-built sublimation printer — plus sublimation ink, transfer paper, and a real heat press capable of holding 380-400°F; an iron won't cut it. The printer's ink system also prefers regular use; sublimation printers left idle for weeks clog. It's a system you commit to, not a thing you dabble in.

Pro tip: A printer converted to sublimation can never reliably go back to regular ink. Convert a cheap dedicated unit, not your family printer.

Design Complexity and Color

This is where the two methods truly diverge. Every color in an HTV design is a separate cut, weed, and layered press — a 4-color design is 4x the work, and photorealistic gradients are effectively impossible. Sublimation prints anything your printer can render: photographs, watercolor textures, hundreds of colors, all in a single press with no weeding.

The flip side: HTV's limitation pushes designs toward the bold, few-color style that reads cleanly on a shirt anyway — and specialty finishes like glitter, foil, holographic, and puff only exist in vinyl. Sublimation is always flat and smooth.

Durability and Feel

Sublimation wins durability outright: the design is dye inside the fibers, so it cannot crack, peel, or lift, and it survives unlimited wash cycles — the shirt wears out before the print does. Quality HTV applied correctly lasts years of regular washing, but it is still a film with edges; eventually heavy use shows cracking on large solid areas or lifting on fine details.

Feel matters for buyers too. Sublimation is completely undetectable to the touch, which people notice on large prints. Modern thin HTV is much better than it used to be, but a big solid HTV chest print still has a slight plasticky hand.

Beyond Shirts: Mugs, Tumblers, and Blanks

Sublimation opens up a whole catalog of "blanks" — mugs, tumblers, mousepads, coasters, keychains, ornaments — manufactured with a polymer coating the dye bonds into. The result is genuinely dishwasher-safe drinkware with photo-quality art, which vinyl cannot honestly match. If drinkware is the goal, sublimation is the stronger long-term path; the catch is you must buy sublimation-coated blanks — the dye won't bond to a plain ceramic mug.

Which One for a Small Business?

Start with what your bestsellers demand. Dark cotton shirts, name decals, and specialty finishes: HTV. All-over prints, photo gifts, and dishwasher-safe mugs: sublimation. Many sellers begin with HTV because the equipment cost is a tenth of a sublimation setup and cotton shirts dominate custom orders, then add sublimation once mug and photo-gift requests justify the printer. There's also a hybrid path: sublimating onto white glitter HTV, then pressing that onto a cotton shirt — a common workaround for full-color designs on cotton, at the cost of the vinyl feel.

Bottom Line

Choose HTV when you need any-fabric, any-color flexibility, low startup cost, or specialty textures. Choose sublimation when you need full-color art, an unbeatable soft feel, hard goods, or wash-proof permanence — and you can live inside the white-polyester constraint.
