Frequently Asked Questions

What image format works best for Cricut?

PNG files with transparent backgrounds work best for Cricut Design Space. CutReady helps you convert any image into a clean, cut-ready PNG with reduced colors and transparent backgrounds. SVG files also work well for more complex designs that need precise cutting paths.

How many colors should I use for vinyl cutting?

Most vinyl cutting projects use 2 to 6 colors. Each color in your design represents a different piece of vinyl you will need to cut and layer. Start with fewer colors for your first project, then work up to more complex multi-layer designs as you gain experience.

What is color quantization?

Color quantization is the process of reducing the number of colors in an image. CutReady uses the median cut algorithm to intelligently group similar colors together. This is essential for vinyl cutting because each color becomes a separate vinyl layer that must be cut individually.

Can I use photographs with my Cricut?

Yes, but photographs need significant processing first. Photos contain thousands of colors which is impractical for vinyl cutting. CutReady reduces your photo to a manageable number of flat colors, creating a poster-like effect that works with vinyl. Best results come from high-contrast photos with clear subjects.

What is Oracal 651 vinyl?

Oracal 651 is a popular permanent adhesive vinyl used with Cricut and Silhouette machines. It comes in over 60 colors and is rated for outdoor use lasting up to 6 years. CutReady maps your image colors to the closest Oracal 651 shades to help you choose which vinyl to purchase.

How do I remove the background from my image?

CutReady has a one-click background removal tool. It detects the most common color in the corners of your image, assumes that is the background, and replaces it with transparency. You can adjust the color tolerance slider to capture more or less of the background color.

What is the difference between PNG and SVG export?

PNG is a pixel-based image format that preserves your exact color layout. SVG is a vector format that defines shapes with mathematical paths, allowing infinite scaling without quality loss. For simple shapes, SVG gives cleaner cuts. For detailed images, PNG is usually better as the conversion is more predictable.

Why do I need per-color PNG layers?

Per-color PNG layers let you cut each vinyl color separately. Each layer file contains only one color in black on a transparent background. You import each layer into your cutting software, assign it the correct vinyl color, and cut them one at a time. This is the standard workflow for multi-color vinyl projects.

What DPI should I export at?

300 DPI is the recommended setting for most vinyl cutting projects. It provides enough detail for clean edges while keeping file sizes manageable. Use 150 DPI for large simple designs where fine detail is not important, and 600 DPI only for very small intricate cuts where maximum precision is needed.

Does CutReady upload my images to a server?

No. CutReady runs entirely in your web browser. Your images are never uploaded anywhere. All processing happens on your device using JavaScript and Web Workers. This means your images stay private and the tool works even without an internet connection once the page is loaded.
